Understanding LSI-Keywords: A Beginners Guide

LSI-Keywords (LSI = Latent Semantic Indexing) are similar or semantically related words or phrases that are used in search engine optimization (SEO) in relation to a specific keyword.

They help search engines evaluate the quality and relevance of content for a particular search query, ensuring that they provide users with the most suitable search results.

How do I use LSI-Keywords?

To use LSI-Keywords in your content, you can follow these steps:

  1. Identify the main keyword for your content.
  2. Use a keyword research tool to find similar or semantically related words or phrases that are used in relation to the main keyword.
Some free SEO tools for keyword research can be found here.
  3. Also, the Google suggestions you get when typing in the search bar are a good indication of search queries and phrases. Who knows better than Google itself? 😉
  4. Integrate the researched LSI-Keywords naturally into your content by using them in headings, subheadings, paragraphs, and image captions. Be sure to maintain a clean heading structure (H1, H2, H3, etc.).
  5. Use the researched words and phrases in your meta-tags, especially in the meta description, which is shown on the search results page, as well as in the ALT-tags of your images. Always ensure that you use the keywords contextually.
  6. Make sure your entire website content is readable and natural and not just optimized for search engines. Otherwise, it could backfire:
  7. If you insert too many keywords too obviously into your content without focusing on readability, the time visitors spend on your website will decrease, and the bounce rate will increase.
Ergo: You have created a type of “over-optimization,” which can lead to a downgrade by search engines – also known as keyword stuffing.
